VisionTrack Welcomes UK’s Bold Road Safety Strategy – January 2026

15 January 2026
The UK government has unveiled its first comprehensive Road Safety Strategy in more than a decade, setting ambitious targets to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads by 65% by 2035. This landmark initiative represents a turning point in tackling preventable collisions and improving safety for all road users.
Every day, four lives are lost on Britain’s roads, and thousands more suffer life changing injuries. The new strategy adopts the internationally recognised Safe System approach, which acknowledges that while human error is inevitable, deaths and serious injuries are not. By combining safer road design, advanced vehicle technology, enforcement, and education, the government aims to create a safer future for everyone.
What the Strategy Means for Businesses and Fleets
One of the most striking statistics in the strategy is that one in three road fatalities involves someone driving for work. This highlights the urgent need for employers to take proactive steps in managing road risk. The government’s proposed National Work-Related Road Safety Charter will set a national standard for organisations whose employees drive or ride for work, covering everything from cars and vans to motorcycles and e-cycles.
For fleet operators, this is a pivotal moment. Compliance, accountability, and safety will become central to operational standards and technology will play a critical role in achieving these goals.
VisionTrack’s Role in Safer Roads
At VisionTrack, we share the government’s vision of reducing road casualties and creating safer communities. Our AI-powered video telematics solutions can help fleets:
- Prevent collisions before they happen through real time monitoring and proactive alerts.
- Identify high-risk behaviours such as speeding, distraction, fatigue, and mobile phone use.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and reduce liability through robust reporting and evidence.
- Support driver training and education with actionable insights that improve performance over time.
By leveraging cutting-edge technology, we enable businesses to protect their drivers, reduce insurance costs, and contribute to the national effort to save lives.
Technology and Collaboration Are Key
The strategy also mandates 18 new vehicle safety technologies, including autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. VisionTrack complements these measures by providing advanced telematics that integrate seamlessly with fleet operations, delivering a holistic approach to road safety.
As the government consults on measures such as alcohol interlocks, mandatory eyesight tests, and improved training for young drivers, it’s clear that technology and collaboration will be essential to success. Businesses that act now to adopt proactive safety solutions will not only comply with future standards but also demonstrate leadership in protecting lives.
Our Partnerships: Driving for Better Business and Brake
VisionTrack is proud to work alongside leading road safety organisations to promote best practice and reduce risk on UK roads.
Driving for Better Business (DfBB), an initiative run by National Highways, helps employers manage work-related road risk and improve compliance. Through our partnership, VisionTrack supports businesses in implementing robust safety policies and leveraging technology to monitor and improve driver behaviour. Together, we aim to make road safety a core part of corporate responsibility and operational excellence.
We also collaborate with Brake, the road safety charity, which campaigns tirelessly to prevent road deaths and injuries and supports victims of road crashes. VisionTrack shares Brake’s commitment to creating a world where no one is killed or seriously injured on the roads. Our technology provides the tools fleets need to reduce risk, while Brake’s advocacy ensures that road safety remains a national priority.
These partnerships reflect our belief that road safety is a shared responsibility – between government, businesses, technology providers, and the public. By working together, we can achieve the ambitious targets set out in the new strategy.
Why This Matters Now
Over the past decade, the UK has slipped from third to fourth in European road safety rankings, with 22 countries making more progress in reducing fatalities. The government’s new strategy aims to reverse this trend by addressing key risk factors:
- Drink and drug driving: 1 in 6 road fatalities involves drink driving. The strategy includes consultations on lowering the drink-drive limit and introducing alcohol interlock devices.
- Young driver safety: Drivers aged 17–24 represent just 6% of licence holders but are involved in 24% of fatal and serious collisions. A minimum learning period of 3–6 months is proposed.
- Older driver safety: Mandatory eyesight testing for drivers over 70 will be considered, along with cognitive assessments.
- Work-related road risk: A national charter will set standards for employers whose staff drive for work.
- Vehicle technology: Mandatory adoption of advanced safety features such as autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance.
These measures, combined with enforcement and education, will save thousands of lives and ease pressure on the NHS.
VisionTrack’s Commitment
Our mission has always been clear: to make roads safer for everyone. The government’s strategy reinforces the importance of technology in achieving this goal. VisionTrack’s solutions are already helping fleets across the UK and internationally to:
- Reduce collision rates by up to 30%.
- Lower insurance premiums through improved risk profiles.
- Protect vulnerable road users by monitoring blind spots and detecting hazards.
- Provide irrefutable evidence in the event of an incident, reducing fraudulent claims and legal disputes.
As the UK embarks on this bold new chapter in road safety, VisionTrack stands ready to support businesses, policymakers, and campaigners in delivering meaningful change.
